Jim Crow: State-by-State

Step 1: Select your home state and at least two others and read examples of Jim Crow laws provided here.

Step 2: Inspired by one or more of the laws you found in your research, create a persuasive document highlighting the negative elements and impacts of Jim Crow. Basically, imagine that you are an activist during this era and you want to show people the unfairness, inequality, or ignorance of Jim Crow. What would you create?

Some ideas include:

  • A persuasive article that might be run in a local newspaper
  • A political cartoon
  • A work of fine art (drawing, painting, etc.)
  • A short film or documentary

Just make sure that whatever you create is informative and persuasive. Imagine that your audience is a white moderate who is unsure whether to support Jim Crow or push against it. Create something that will educate them and convince them to join your side.
